Pattern is an arrangement of regular repeated motif from nature (things created by God) in the environment in general in such a way that rhythm is created in colours, tone or texture on a given surface.

Pattern making features very well in textile design wall paper, wrappers, carpets, boarder designs etc.

It is also an art of creating designs on paper or any other surface for various purposes.

There are different ways of putting designs together using various elements such as:

1. Pattern making with lines

2. Design symbols and shapes.

3. Design from nature.

REPEAT PATTERN

Repeat pattern is a systematic arrangement of motif in order to achieve rhythm. As the name implies, repeat pattern means the duplication of motif all over a given surface in a chosen pattern.

Motif is the unit of a design or major theme in artwork especially in pattern making where it is repeated several times and at regular intervals.

Motif can be formed from natural or artificial objects, abstract, geometric, regular and irregular shapes. Motifs are used in making beautiful pattern design on cloths e.g. it is used in making repeat pattern on fabrics like Ankara, and batik cloths.

Formation of motif is made from:

1. Nature: tree, leaves, flowers, animals, insects, snail, etc.

2. Man-made: bucket, drum, telephone, lamp, lantern etc.

3. Photography: portrait of a notable person for politics, club, religion, festival etc.

4. Abstract: shapes, lines, waves etc.

METHOD OF REPEAT PATTERN

1. Half drop

2. Full drop

4. Diamond repeat

5. Mirror repeat

6. Counter change.

7., brick or block repeat.
